people

People are awkward things to be around.
Often uncomfortably so.
They're vulnerable, but they do a good job of masking it.
They have scripts, and walls, and maneuvers, and it's all very convincing.
But I find it discomforting. It keeps me out. It denies me a space.
It makes things unequal.

And it makes them seem intimidating; more than they are. Better than they are.
Better than me, for example.

It's hard not to believe the performance.
And for the most part, I do.
That's my mistake.
Despite all their efforts to put on a great show,
people want you to see through it.
They're waiting to be noticed.
Admired.
Loved.
Not for who they try to be,
but for who they are.

I think we are what we pretend to be. There is no "I" in there. Everything is surface and affectation.

;-) Spoken like a true Buddhist! (sort of) I completely agree with you on one (more abstract, philosophical) level, but disagree on an experiential one.
But here I'm really talking specifically about vulnerability. People seem to avoid and despise it, but it's often the one thing that can truly bring us together.
Oh well.

Well, you can't let your vulnerability show to just anyone. . .
